KYRNEA International and its plan "Passeurs d'images"
|
|
|
KYRNEA International is a Non-Governmental Organisation that ensures the national coordination of « PASSEURS D'IMAGES ». Launched in 1991 by the National Centre of Cinematography, “PASSEURS D'IMAGES” is a national plan for image literacy outside school time. It mainly focuses on young people with little to no access to cinema and video for social or educational reasons. Nearly 2000 projects are implemented annually : screenings, workshops, trainings, meetings with filmmakers...
“PASSEURS D'IMAGES” network objectives are :
- showing another kind of cinema, different from the one transmitted by the media and the movie industry
- helping people get a better understanding of images (movies, video games, television) in their personal environment
- developping social links within the territories where the activities take place
- promoting projects the objectives of which are to highlight cultural diversity in Society in order to prevent social and cultural discrimination
- training local partners connected with moving images literacy
A unique device in many aspects :
- the result of a policy supported by several ministries : Ministry of Culture and Communication, Ministry of Sport, Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Health...)
- Outside school time, this plan both adresses the public through screenings, workshops, and special fares and professionals by offering them adequate trainings
- A dynamic and wide network : «Passeurs d'Images» rests on a network of more than 2000 cultural or social structures, covering 26 French regions, the area of Charleroi in Belgium, more than 400 cities and 300 000 people.
In 15 years time, "PASSEURS D’IMAGES" allowed its network members to become experienced in image literacy outside school time
Presently, the need for National and European networks to exchange and thus strenghten has become obvious.

"Passeurs d'images" and Europe
|
|
|
Since 1991, Kyrnea International has been commissioned by its national partners to coordonate the network “PASSEURS D'IMAGES” in France.
As such, Kyrnea has been developing a wide range of tools such as coordination meetings, conferences, training programmes, programming advice, a multimedia library, a web site, a magazine and DVDs.
The necessity of building links with international, and especially european partners being also mentionned as a part of its mission, Kyrnea has organised or taken part to the following European events and therefore gained significant experience in the field of intercultural dialogue :
- first European Forum on Youth and Moving Images (REJI) in 1999 (Marseille, Youth for Europe Programme)
- training sessions for « Cinéville » (ex-« PASSEURS D'IMAGES ») regional coordinators , one session listed on the European programs (Lille, 2002)
- broadcasting and programming of european movies within "PASSEURS D’IMAGES" network and during the national meeting on a one-day programme called « Initiating and developing links in Europe » (Paris, decembre 2005)
- welcoming of a Belgian delegation to « Cinéville » network
- participation in numerous international meetings and festivals : exchange programme with the French Quebec Youth Office in Montreal and Quebec, Olhares Alternativos in Lisbon; FIFEJ in Sousse, Tunisia, Fespaco in Ouagadougou, Burkina ; SIYFF in South Corea; Göteborg festival in Sweden, festival in Slovenia etc.
- active involvement in the European network YEFF! (Young European Film Forum) and organisation of YEFF! France 2007 from June 29th to July 10th, 2007 : during 12 days, it brought together 64 young people from 11 European countries. European groups were welcomed by French groups in several French regions. All the participants then gathered in Paris.
YEFF! is a European youth film meeting and a growing network which aims to promote Youth involvement in modern media.
The network is connected with partners in more than 10 European countries and is constantly growing. Every two years a Yeff! film forum takes place in a different European city. Young people from all over Europe are asked to produce films on the topic of cultural diversity and to present their work at Yeff! forum.
Participants are encouraged to think over their image in modern media, to learn how to represent their own realities and to share their vision with a broader public.
